All In A Golden Afternoon

...You can learn a lot of things from the flowers

Oh now I want to watch Alice in Wonderland!...maybe later

Anyway, onto my post.

Today was a great day. The weather is finally starting to get nice!

I woke up really early this morning. Okay, 8 o'clock isn't that early for most people, but it is for me! The reason I woke up so early is because my brother woke me up and asked me to take him to work. After I got back home, I made cookies. Yes, that's right. I baked cookies at 8:30 in the morning.
After that I got dressed for the day, and took some pictures.

I originally had plans to go see an Indie music band with a friend, but they unexpectedly cancelled the night before, so all of a sudden I had a whole day free. I was pretty sure it was going to be spent talking to my sister, browsing the internet for pretty things, and drinking tea. Then I decided to check listings for estate/tag sales. Now usually, for me, estate sales hardly ever have clothes. Even though I hear or read about people finding fabulous outfits, I never have such luck.

However!

This one mentioned in the listing that it had vintage clothing. I was so excited I could hardly contain myself, so I grabbed some cash and headed out.

When I got there I was really worried because it was not a grand estate, but a small warehouse type building and I started thinking it was some sort of elaborate trap to ensnare girls who like vintage...but it was fine. Apparently the family didn't want a sale at the house or something, so the estate sale company took it to their home base.

The selection was actually good. There were a few of the typical clothing items. Hideous 80's pantsuits and all that rot. But they also had lots of good vintage, mostly from the 40's and 50's. I do think a few of the pieces were 30's but I was kind of in a hurry.

And you will NEVER GUESS my luck....Okay I will tell you. Basically all the clothes were MY SIZE!!!!! It's hard to find larger vintage sized clothing so I was thrilled. I ended up getting 6 dresses, and 1 blouse. I got a really good deal because nearly every item had some sort of damage. I see myself repairing and stain removing lots of clothing in the future!

But it was a good day!

This is one of my favorite hats!

 My spoils

I will try to go from left to right starting at the top
1.) 50's/60's  Blue and Leopard wiggle dress 2.) 40's War Era swing dress with original belt and side button closure (the only thing that didn't fit me...it's going in the Etsy shop!) 3.)  50's Grey and red wooly dress with rhinestone buttons 4.) 40's/50's Pink acetate dress with buttons down the front and original belt (this dress, unfortunately has a lot of damage)  5.) 50's Brown and cream dress 6.) 50's Fabulous front-zip housecoat with full skirt.

And that thing at the top is the blouse!

After I got back and played dress up, I went for a run. And now I am showered and cozy and relaxing with a hot tea and a ginger cookie (or two!)

A Beehive... And a Gibson Girl

Recently a song that I have been playing pretty much non-stop is "Gypsy" by Shakira. It inspired my outfit, along with Jane Fonda. I also recently watched the movie, Period of Adjustment (1962) starring Jane Fonda. The whole movie takes place mostly in one day and covers what the "period of adjustment" is like for newlywed couples. She has a really awesome hairdo it in, and I love her shirt.

I knew I had a shirt somewhat similar hiding in my closet, so I dug around and found it. It has no shirring, and buttons up the front, but the neckline and sleeves are similar. Unfortunately the top is very short, so the skirt I wanted to wear with it didn't work, but the gypsy aspect led me to a short wrap skirt that's part of a playsuit set that a friend bought for me on a cruise when we were in high school.

I was too late for natural light again, so again I have slightly grainy photos.

I know it's the middle of January ,but I wasn't going to need to leave the house today, so I paid no heed to the weather conditions.

I went barefoot today because I was in the house and it fit with the whole "gypsy" vibe. You can also see Roxie made a cameo appearance.

Now for the hair. My hair always looks better in person, but here are a few pictures to give you any idea.

To do my hair this way, I started with curls. I just slept on yesterdays hair because my hair is naturally curly, so the curl holds overnight.I took out my "bangs" and back-combed large sections of hair until there was a ton of volume. A lot of people use lots of products in their beehives, but I only used a small spritz of hairspray at the end, so mine isn't quite as voluminous as others. Then I smoothed the top hair slightly with a comb and pinned it into place while pushing up, so I didn't lose the volume. I much prefer this looser curly version to the sleek beehives. It's much more Brigitte Bardot-y. :)

P.S.
As I was combing out my teased hair, I realized it was too good to pass up doing something to it...so I did. I did a Gibson girl style (a very loose interpretation of course) and took a few pictures. Hehehe, I kind of love it.

It's very Anne of Green Gables, don't you think? The red hair helps the image of course.

Also, I made a chocolate cake, a generous piece of which I am enjoying right now. Enjoy your evenings everyone!

Pincurl Hair

Well, here is what it looked like right after I took the pin curls out.

And here is what it looked like after I fixed it.

My pin curls were a little bit off today. Probably because I did them a little bit differently. There are a lot of tutorials out there on how to do pin curls and victory rolls. Solanah of Vixen Vintage has a great tutorial on her blog! Personally, I always knew how to do it, only I didn't really call it anything, and when I was little my mom did rag curls a lot.

I was another warm day (even though it started raining around 3 and then proceeded to turn chilly). I wore a dress out to my class and was fine, in fact I had to take my sweater off! I have one final next week, and a paper due this week, and then the semester is over! I don't start again until the middle of January.

Speaking of school...I had a very trying day today, a very trying day indeed.

So it all started when I could not register for the chem and bio classes I wanted. I went into the records and registration office to see was what wrong, and they asked me to find out the class numbers, and then tell them so they could check it out. Turns out, I did not meet the math requirement for chemistry. The nice lady told me that I could petition the chairperson of the science department to waive the pre-requisite. It sounded like a very daunting task, but I decided to try my hand. I go to the office and his secretary basically told me that there was no way he would let me take chem without the math, but she asked if I still wanted to see him. So I figured I might as well try and convince him (I already took 2 algebra's, pre-calc, bio, and chem in high school). I waited for what seemed like hours with bated breath for him to open the door to his office. When he finally did, he ushered me in and asked what I wanted. I told him my plight and he said was sorry, but he really couldn't do it. As he was walking me out of his office, I burst into tears. No piddly tears either, I'm talking, massive sobs that racked my whole body and rendered me speechless and incompetent. He grabbed me some tissues and made me sit back down in his office. I sat in there for a good 10 minutes blubbering while he went to help someone else that was waiting for him outside of his office. When I finally regained speech he asked me about what I took in high school. I told him that I felt completely confident in my ability to take the classes. And he told me that he would let me take the classes because anybody that cried over their education was worth it and that no one ever cried in his office before. He also said I reminded him of his daughter my age. And he wants me to come back at the end of the semester and show him my grades, so I have to work really hard next semester.

So that was my very trying day.

To make myself feel better, on the way home, I stopped at a relatively new tea salon and bakery. I got a lavender bubble tea and a red velvet cupcake. It was good. I liked the tea a lot more than I liked the cupcake (I think I may not like red velvet). It's called Koko. And the interior is simply adorable and oh so girly! White painted furniture, chandeliers, and billowy rose patterned fabric everywhere. Next time I go I shall try and take a picture. If you are in the greater Columbus area I highly recommend them (it's in Gahanna).

Well I think that's all for today!
I hope your day was not a trying one :)
